The NUK Sensitive Breast Pump has a suction strength regulator, which is a useful feature as it makes expressing more comfortable. I started with the lowest setting and increased the strength gradually to speed the process. The pump is light, quiet and easy to operate.

Its ergonomic handle allowed me to express with one hand. It’s very easy to take apart for cleaning and assemble again for use – the instructions are comprehensive and very clear.

The silicone cushion ensured a good fit and the bumps on its surface did provide a gentle massaging effect.

The pump has two valves to ensure its efficiency and avoid the risk of breast milk getting into the pump unit, which is unhygienic and can impede correct functioning. Unusually, the bottle can be frozen, reheated and fed to your baby.

And last, but not least, both housing and handle are made of unbreakable PP (polypropylene), which contains no bisphenol-A (that’s BPA).

What to watch for

The bottle must be held upright and facing downwards, so that the milk flows into the bottle and not into the pump unit.

All components can be sterilised by boiling or with steam steriliser, except the pump unit. The microwave shouldn’t be used for sterilising as the pump unit contains a metal spring.

As with other manual pumps, the pump is slow going, so don’t be tempted to increase the suction strength too quickly or you’ll get a very sore nipple.
