Travel Health Checklist Qatar: Medicines to Pack Before You Fly

For many travellers leaving Doha for a summer holiday or an Umrah trip, packing prescription medicines often raises questions about airport rules, required supporting documents, and how to carry them safely.

Many travellers don't realise that some prescription and controlled medicines require supporting documents and should be kept in hand luggage with prescriptions readily available for security checks. Preparing before departure can help avoid delays, questions at the airport, and the stress of having to replace essential medicines abroad.

Most travellers leaving Doha with routine medicines only need to keep them in their original packaging and carry a copy of their prescription. Extra paperwork is required for controlled or psychotropic medicines.

Qatar's Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) offers an official service called "Issuance of Export Permit for Medications for Patients Travelling Outside Qatar." Issued by the Pharmacy and Drug Control Department, the permit applies to patients carrying locally or internationally controlled medicines. The service is free, and MOPH lists an estimated processing time of 1 hour and 50 minutes, although travellers should apply several days before departure.

Travellers carrying controlled medicines without the required approval may be asked for additional documents at customs, and the medicines can be held until their medical use is verified.

Common over-the-counter medicines such as paracetamol and oral rehydration salts do not usually require permits. Prescription medicines should be carried with copies of prescriptions or medical reports. If you're travelling with controlled medicines, check whether MOPH approval is needed. Medication rules vary between GCC countries and other destinations, so it's worth checking the requirements before you fly.

How you pack your medicines matters, especially on long-haul flights or trips during Qatar's hotter months. A delayed suitcase or exposure to extreme temperatures can create problems that are difficult to fix once you're abroad.

Hamad International Airport permits medically necessary liquids, insulin pens, and syringes after security screening when accompanied by appropriate medical documentation. Prescription medicines and other essential treatments are best kept in your hand luggage, where they are easier to access during the journey and available if your checked bags are delayed.

Personal liquids are generally limited to containers of 100 ml or less and should be packed in a clear, resealable plastic bag. Medically necessary liquid medicines are permitted, provided supporting documents are available during security screening.

If you're transferring through Hamad International Airport with liquids purchased at another airport, keep them sealed with proof of purchase.

Insulin and GLP-1 injection pens are sensitive to heat. Unopened pens are usually stored between 2°C and 8°C, while pens in use can generally be kept below 30°C for a limited period according to their instructions.
