The unexpected hair loss reasons and how to manage it

Both men and women suffer from hair loss for various reasons. It can be the result of heredity, hormonal changes, medical conditions or a normal part of ageing. Anyone can lose hair on their head, but it is more common in men.

People typically lose 50 to 100 hairs in a day. It is usually not noticeable as the new hair grows at the same time. Hair Loss becomes a problem when new hair doesn't replace the hair that has fallen out.

Hair Loss is typically related to one or more of the following factors.

Hereditary hair loss or family history

The most common cause of hair loss is hereditary conditions. It can happen at any age and not restricted to an older age. This condition is called androgenic alopecia. Mostly it occurs gradually and in a predictable pattern.

Means if you have receding hairline runs in the family, that will be in your genes too. If you’ve inherited genes that cause your hair follicles (what each hair grows out of) to shrink and eventually stop growing hair, it will come in action at some point. Shrinking can begin as early as your teens, but it usually starts later in life

Usually, the first noticeable sign in men is often the receding hairline or bald spot at the top of their head.

This type of hair loss can be reversed or slow down if the treatment starts early. But without treatment, you will continue to lose hair.

    Ageing process

Age is another factor for hair loss. With age, some people may get hair loss as the hair growth slows. As time passes hair follicles stop growing new hair. This will add oil to the problem.

In many cases, when treatment started early visible improvement in this situation occurred.

    Alopecia Areata

It is an autoimmune condition that causes hair to fall out suddenly. In this condition, the immune system attacks follicles, along with other healthy parts of the body. Not just the hair from the scalp, eyebrows and eyelashes may also be affected and fall out in chunks.

Sometimes hair fails to grow back in some cases. But there are treatments available to stimulate the regrowth.

    Nutritional factors

Nutritional deficiencies can cause hair loss. Extreme diet or restricted diet, that is too low on protein and certain vitamins or iron can cause excessive hair loss.

If you suspect this could be the reason for your hair loss you should see a doctor for a blood test to check if they have a nutritional deficiency that could be causing their hair to fall out. Once it is sorted, hair fall will stop too.

    Certain medications

Side effects of certain medicines may cause hair loss. Reducing the dosage or changing the medicine usually reduces the risk. But sometimes new hair will not grow naturally. In such conditions, treatment can regrow the lost hair and reduce further hair loss.

    Poison

Exposure to poison can lead to hair loss. Poisons that can cause hair loss include arsenic, thallium, mercury, and lithium.

Taking large amounts of vitamin A or selenium is also toxic and can cause hair loss. In such cases, hair tends to regrow when you are no longer exposed to the poison.

    Improper hair care methods

Colouring, perming, heat treatments and chemical treatments can be very damaging to your hair. It could result in severe hair loss. If you often wear your hair tightly pulled back, the continual pulling can lead to permanent hair loss. The medical name for this condition is traction alopecia.

You can prevent this type of hair loss by changing how you care for your hair.

You lose hair because of the loosening and shrinking of the hair follicle, making it incapable of regrowing new hair strands and failing to hold the existing ones. There are many hair loss treatments available to reverse the situation. Minoxidil solution is one of them, and it is clinically proven for the treatment of hereditary hair loss in men.
